Club Championship Finals Report 2nd & 3rd October 2021.
What a fabulous two days of Tennis we were treated to over the first weekend in October as we hosted the Club Championships for 2021.
The Junior Finals kicked off the play starting at 9am on a rather over cast Saturday morning. This did not deter from some wonderful tennis by our younger members.
Unfortunately, play had to cease briefly around 11.30 am as we made a rapid retreat when the heavens opened and down came the rain. The great news is that at Byfleet we have the option of Indoor courts, this privileged facility was invaluable in ensuring we completed the day’s proceedings when the weather was not on our side.
The move to Indoors did not detract from a fabulous atmosphere and some superb, and hard-fought matches as the youngsters battled it out, finally completing around 7 pm on Saturday night. A full write up from Ben is available here :
Adult Club Championships Sunday 3rd October.
Following on from the success of Saturday was going to be a tough act to follow but, as the Adults began around 11 am on Sunday morning it soon became obvious we were not going to be disappointed by the quality of play and match competition throughout the day.
The weather started us off on a right note as the sun shone, in fact seeing the other side of the net was a challenge in itself for the first couple of hours and players with sunglasses on a sunny Sunday morning in October were sensibly adorned!
Trophies were awarded throughout the day and a fitting tribute and celebration to mark the departure of Fred Bell who devoted many years of his life to looking after the courts took place around 1 pm. We said goodbye to Fred and acknowledged his hard work over the years.
The matches continued into the early afternoon before a heavy shower resulted in a quick escape into the summer house and my thanks go out to all those who helped as we quickly had to take down Gazebos, rescue trophies and dismantle tables before they were blown away in the strong winds and heavy rain that quickly emerged. I am delighted to say that as quickly as it came, it went, and play was successfully rounded off at 4 pm with great scheduling and a well organised order of play by Barbara.
Both Adult and Junior Championships were a huge success, this was achieved through the hard work and commitment of both Barbara and Ben. They both worked tirelessly to ensure the success of the weekend and the Board and I are very grateful to them both. We hope that more players will enter the 2022 championships and will be refining the dates and taking learnings from this year to ensure we continue to evolve the success of the championships going forward.
Congratulations to all the winners, and many thanks to all that entered, there would be no Club Championships without players, so please do enter again next year and encourage all your friends to join you.
Pictures from the weekend demonstrate some great “shots” and tell the story of a wonderful weekend at the Club.
